Prevent a Flood with New Washing Machine Hoses
8/30/2019 (Permalink)
A burst washing machine hose can spill hundreds of gallons of water in just one hour! Prevent a water disaster by replacing your washer's old rubber hoses, ideally with steel-jacketed ones that can't split open. It’s an easy process that most homeowners can handle and it can pay big dividends in reduced flood risk.
- Remove the old hoses
- Clean the filter screens
- Install new braided hoses (60" length is recommended)
- Reconnect to the water supply
Check your hoses every six months and replace them every five years (tag hoses with the date you installed them so you won't forget).
Consider Adding a Drip Pan
A drip pan under the washer will catch any leaks (and is required in second-floor laundry rooms). Buy a pan with a drain so any water that collects can be diverted to a floor drain. You'll need a helper and perhaps a dolly to lift the washer gently onto the pan so you don’t crack it.
