Flooded Basement Cleanup in Hebron
6/17/2021 (Permalink)
Your Hebron basement can flood any time of year. In the summer, it often happens after a heavy rain or when a water appliance, such as a washing machine or water heater, fails. Either way, standing water in your basement can damage the foundation of your home and ruin furniture and stored property. And if not thoroughly dried out (ideally within 48 hours), your basement can become infested with mold. That’s why Hebron homeowners should act quickly if a basement floods.
Check Outside Your Home First
If the source of the flooding isn’t obvious, check your home’s exterior for signs of damage from floods, heavy rain or even a fallen tree. While you’re outside, if you notice downed power lines or smell gas, call your power company before you enter your basement.
Be Safe: Shut Off Your Utilities
With water on the basement floor, the risk of electrocution or other injuries is very real, so you need to turn off your electricity and gas before you start cleaning up. Call your utility company and have them shut off the power and gas to your home or call a pro to do it. Only in an emergency should you do it yourself.
Remove the Water
Substantial flood water puts enough pressure on your basement walls that removing all the water at once can actually cause the walls to crack and even collapse. Pump a few inches or feet of water out and mark the height, then wait 24 hours. If the mark is under water, wait another 24 hours, then repeat the pumping and mark the level again. Do this until the water level stops rising, then pump out the water in increments every 24 hours until your basement is water-free.
Once the water is out, open windows and doors. Set up fans to circulate the air. Your goal is to lower the moisture level as fast as possible.
Clean Out the Muck and Water-Damaged Items
Remove all the wet or water-damaged furniture, carpeting, furnishings and objects from your basement. Ideally, you can set them outside to dry in the sun. It’s essential that you dry your possessions thoroughly to prevent mold infestation. Most likely, though, after a major basement flood, you’ll have to discard a lot of what you had in your basement.
Shovel and broom out mud and sediment. Disinfect your basement walls and flooring with a mixture of bleach and water. Wash grates and vents in the bleach solution and replace moisture-affected filters.
