Prepare for the Next Storm: Make a Plan (Step 2)
11/4/2021 (Permalink)
The time to do basic storm-ready preparation is long before the storm arrives. Storms and other natural disasters are happening more frequently and are more intense, so one of the smartest things we all can do is to be as prepared as possible for the damage and disruption a storm can bring.
SERVPRO may be in the business of storm damage remediation—and we have seen it all—but we hope you will follow our recommended steps to be ready to weather a storm and its aftermath. These steps will require a little time to cross off your list, so make it a priority to set aside an afternoon to talk through these items. You’ll be glad you did!
Develop a Plan for a Storm or Other Emergency
This is another step you should take well before a storm is forecast for your area. You’ll want to gather your family members together to agree on a plan and to be sure everyone understands the details.
- Make an escape plan. In case you need to evacuate your home, you should know in advance where you will go. Choose both a local place you can all walk to and a more distant location if the evacuation affects a wider area around your home. Those locations may be a public shelter or a relative’s or friend’s home. Map out the evacuation route and consider practicing it. Also, choose a meeting place in case you are separated when the storm hits.
- Pick a contact person outside of your area. This may be a friend or family member who will be your point of contact for information and communicating if you are safe.
- Join forces with your neighbors. When a disaster hits, it’s often your neighbors who can offer the most help. Share contact information and talk through some of the actions you can take to help one another and stay safe together.
- Check your first aid kit. Make sure your first aid kit is fully stocked, supplement it if not, review the contents with your family and consider taking a first aid class through the American Red Cross.
- Pack a go bag. Stuff a duffel or backpack with meds you need to take, a supply of shelf-stable food and water, first aid supplies, important papers (ID, insurance, etc.), contact information and more.
